  The Wounded Shepherd No. 1

(wax, oil pastel, 14"x18" framed original; also available in prints and note cards)

I began this piece with a tree in mind.  Turn it upside down and you'll see how the figure could have become a tree trunk.  In reverse, a shepherd emerged and gradually the sheep and lambs appeared.  To my surprise, as the picture developed, the young shepherd boy had one good leg on his right and a prosthesis on the left side.  An inspiration I thought, "We are all called to shepherd one another in spite of our own wounded-ness."  Soon there followed Wounded Shepherds no. 2 and no. 3.
